SURGICAL CORRECTION of SCAPHOCEPHALY

Abstract

The premature craniosynostosis stops bone growth perpendicular to that suture and impairs radial growth of the calvaria. The resultant physical deformity may involve the facial bones as well as the cranium and cause the decrease of cranial volume, increased ICP, compression of intracranial nerve and cranial deformities.
The scaphocephaly is caused by the premature closure of sagittal suture to show the special cranial form like the scaphoid.
The surgical procedure for scaphocephaly is not simple compared with that for the other form of craniosynostosis.
There is yet to be a widely accepted method of scaphocephly correction, and except for linear craniectomy, most are radical procedures.
We used a method of limited osteotomy for cranial vault remodelling and obtained posterior tilting of the prominent forehead as well as increased biparieto temporal distance.
